We have had days of strong winds starting with a wild El Norte winds then continuing at a solid pace.
What causes such a long run of strong wind? More typically we have a couple of days of strong wind then a gradual fade.
This next graphic shows that during this recent period we have an upper ridge over the western USA. These winds at about 18,000 feet/500 mb formed a northward extending loop in the upper winds that remained stable over the west for days.
Such a stationary upper ridge holds the North Pacific High and the Great Basin High in place so that their isobars stay over the Sea of Cortez. And this means continuing large scale northerly wind that combines with our weak local sea breeze.
